It’s common for people in their twenties (or these days, their thirties) to spend their savings on travel so that they can explore the world while they are young, fit and healthy. It doesn’t matter what your age is, travel not only teaches you many valuable lessons about the globe, but also teaches you things about yourself that you never knew about. Read on to find out why travel can be your therapy!

A Taste of Another Way of Living

It’s 7AM. Time to wake up and get ready for another day of work. At work, you spend a lot of time procrastinating to reply to emails and stare blankly at your screen until it’s time for a break. You finally finish work at 5:30PM and get straight on the train home and contemplate if there’s more to life. There absolutely is!

Too often, we forget that there is an entire world to explore because we get too caught up with our daily routines, which may for a lot of us, be uninspired. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut, consider booking some time to travel and explore a new city. It doesn’t have to be far, just different to what you’re used to. When I’m travelling I always book a homely Airbnb and pretend to live like a local. I always ask my Airbnb host for their local recommendations and find comfort in escaping my every day to try and live like another for a bit. Who knows – If you fall in love with your life while in a new city, you may even consider staying longer!

Experience an Inner Journey While Exploring the Outer

I personally encourage my friends in times of uncertainty to jump on a place, preferably alone, and go to someplace new and foreign. This may sound like torture to some, but I always find that I flourish the most when I am completely independent; away from anyone I know and in a brand new space that is entirely foreign to me. When you’re wandering through a brand new place and don’t know anyone, you must garner the courage to speak to strangers if you need assistance and find your way around town through forcing yourself to learn a new language and seek directions through maps. Travelling solo will make you feel great and re-energised with a newfound sense of courage and self confidence, assuming that you don’t get too lost!

Life Is Short  – Book the Flight!

How often do you hear about individuals who save their income their entire life and end up regretting not being able to explore the world as much as they would have liked to because they are now held back by their age and health? It happens more often than it should. Our time on earth is never guaranteed and it is in our best interest to live our lives with this notion at heart. If you’re facing existential dread, travel is a wonderful outlet for you to reground and focus on what’s truly important in life – experiences and human connection. Take photographs of all the places you get to see and meet new people from around the world! You’ll be one of the lucky ones who got the chance to make memories before it was too late.

No matter where you decide your next trip will be, be sure to try and be mindful of the wonderful experiences you encounter. Learn as much as you can about the city you choose to indulge in – pick up a new language, adventure through different culinary tastes and smells, and make wanderlust your therapy. You’ll feel inspired, energised, confident and filled with immense gratitude when you get to look back at what you’ve been able to achieve and cross off of your bucket list.
